With regard to a healthy environment, Article (32) of the Basic Law of Governance stipulates: "The State shall endeavor to preserve, protect and improve the environment and prevent its pollution." The General Environmental Law, promulgated by Royal Decree No. (M/34), dated 28/7/1422H, corresponding to 16/10/2001, was issued to put in place a framework for all government efforts in this area. Article (2) of the Law states that among the objectives of the Law is to preserve, protect and develop the environment and prevent its pollution. The Law also aims to protect public health from activities and acts that harm the environment, conserve and develop natural resources and rationalize their use, include environmental planning as an integral part of overall development planning in all industrial, agricultural, urban and other fields, and raise awareness of environmental issues.
